The Horn of Africa Relief Development Agency (HARDA) has been running a successful employment training program for a number of years. Each year Jobs for African Migrants Program (JAMP) provides a series of workshops to help develop skills with one-on-one mentoring and group support. The program is aimed at maximising participants' chances of getting jobs that will provide families in vulnerable communities with both much-needed income as well as independence and pride. Most JAMP participants are women who have been successful in finding work. JAMP is supported by the Australian Government.

HARDA runs regular swimming programs for children from our Horn of Africa communities - Ethiopia, South Sudan, Somalia, etc - and after a number of years many of these kids have achieved their bronze medallions and are taking over the role of swimming instructors and teaching the smaller kids. Part of the programs include visits to the beach since many of the kids live in Sydney's west far from the coast and have had little or no experience playing in the surf.

This gives a snapshot of the employment program HARDA has been running annually to help refugees and migrants especially women, from Horn of Africa countries like South Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia find work. here in Australia. Read the Sydney Morning Herald's article on this. For many it represents their first ever job here. Many struggle with literacy and technology and so the training requires constant one-on-one work. But the results are amazing!

Sydney-based aid agency HARDA has responded to a request by the local charity Brothers in Need for 175 sleeping bags for the homeless. As the weather turns cold, these high quality bags will hopefully make the lives of people sleeping rough a little easier.

When you're from East Africa, getting to the beach is not simple. And even if it's only Coogee, one of the calmest beaches in Sydney, the waves can seem pretty big to a family from land-locked South Sudan. Partnering with Kids Giving Back, HARDA has organised the latest in cross cultural activities to give Horn of Africa migrant and refugee families the classic Aussie experience of a swim at the beach. Special thanks to Coogee Surf Lifesaving Club for their kind and patient lessons in beach-swimming.
